Frequently asked

Does this work with auto-generated YouTube captions?+

Yes — both human-uploaded subtitles and YouTube's auto-captions are supported. Paste the URL, pick a language if more than one is available, and download as SRT, VTT, or plain text.

What URL formats are accepted?+

Standard youtube.com/watch?v=…, short youtu.be/… links, Shorts URLs, embed URLs, and the bare 11-character video ID all work.

Why might a fetch fail?+

Two main reasons. (1) The uploader has disabled captions and YouTube hasn't generated auto-captions yet — there's nothing to fetch. (2) The video is private, deleted, or region-locked. If you see captions on YouTube but the tool says 'disabled', wait a minute and retry — YouTube occasionally throttles caption access.

What's the difference between SRT, VTT, and plain text?+

SRT is the universal subtitle format (Premiere, CapCut, DaVinci, every video editor reads it). VTT is the modern web standard used by HTML5 video. Plain text strips timestamps entirely — useful for blog posts, summaries, or feeding into an LLM.

Is this allowed by YouTube's terms?+

We use only public, non-authenticated endpoints YouTube serves to ordinary viewers, and the manual-paste path is just text the user copied from their own browser. Many third-party tools and browser extensions do the same. That said, YouTube can change their format any time and we're not affiliated with them.

Can I download in a non-English language?+

Yes — when the URL fetch succeeds, the language picker lists every track YouTube has for the video. For the manual paste path, just switch YouTube's transcript panel to your language before copying.

How accurate are auto-captions?+

Word error rates of 5–15% are typical for clear English. Heavy accents, music, multiple speakers, and technical jargon push it higher. For a video you're publishing yourself, Whisper-based AI transcription (used in the SoCaptions editor) is more accurate than YouTube's auto-captions.

Can I use the transcript to add captions to my own video?+

Yes — download as SRT and drag it into your editor (Premiere, CapCut, DaVinci, etc.). For one-click viral-style burned-in captions, paste the .srt into SoCaptions.
