Can I edit captions after uploading to a platform?
Short answer
Burned-in captions: no, the file is sealed. Soft captions (SRT/VTT on YouTube, Vimeo): yes, replace the SRT in the platform's caption settings.
Detail
Whether you can edit captions after upload depends on whether they're burned in or soft. Burned-in captions are part of the video pixels — once uploaded, they can't be changed without replacing the entire video file. Soft captions (uploaded SRT or VTT) can be replaced any time: in YouTube Studio open Subtitles, delete the existing track, upload a new one. Vimeo, LinkedIn, Wistia, Loom all expose similar replace flows. TikTok and Reels don't expose soft captions at all — burned-in is your only option, and re-uploading means losing the post's existing engagement.
